Specialist expertise

Huw specialises in the resolution of disputes arising out of complex construction, engineering and infrastructure projects. He is experienced in arbitration, litigation and alternative methods of dispute resolution such as adjudication and mediation.

Examples of Huw’s expertise include:

  • acting for a main contractor in an ICC arbitration, for several hundreds of millions of US dollars, in respect of various significant failures by its design subconsultant on a major metro development in the Middle East as well as issues concerning change orders and delay;
  • acting for a manufacturer of insulation products in multiple cases at the pre-action protocol stage and in litigation in respect of claims in tort and under the Building Safety Act 2022 including high value and complex multiparty litigation in the TCC in respect of: a PFI housing development in the north of England, high-rise residential developments, student accommodation developments, and a hotel development on the outskirts of London;
  • acting for a manufacturer of insulation products in litigation in Northern Ireland in connection with a high-rise residential development in Belfast;
  • acting for a PFI project company in a dispute relating to fire safety issues in a hospital in Scotland;
  • acting for NHS foundation trusts in the North East of England in respect of a number of projects both in negotiating agreements at the outset and in advising on operational issues;
  • advising the management company of a high-rise building in relation to the application of the Building Safety Act and responsibility for procuring of, and payment for, remedial works;
  • acting for an employer on an oil & gas project in the Middle East defending a claim of US$2.5 billion in an LCIA arbitration;
  • advising a foundations installation contractor for an offshore wind farm in respect of claims arising from the late delivery of foundations and suspension of its works;
  • defending a contractor against a £200 million claim in the Scottish Court of Session (both the Outer and the Inner House), arising from a collapse of a section of the headrace tunnel in a recently constructed hydroelectric power station;
  • advising a joint venture of contractors in an adjudication seeking a declaration as to the interpretation of its framework contract for road maintenance works;
  • advising an employer in dispute with the contractor for a new international container terminal in Latin America;
  • advising an employer in a claim in the TCC against the supplier of defective printing presses;
  • defending the supplier of a river water extraction system for the design and supply of defective equipment;
  • advising an international contractor in the preparation of a delay and disruption claim arising from the construction of a large-scale, mixed-use development in the Middle East;
  • advising a homeowner in enforcement proceedings following a series of adjudications; and
  • acting for a specialist façade contractor in an adjudication seeking payment for variations to its works.
