Ted Lowery provides an update on the energy market in Turkmenistan at the TUKTIC conference

On 24 November 2014 Ted Lowery was one of the speakers at the Turkmenistan and United Kingdom Trade and Industry Council (‘TUKTIC’) Conference in London.

TUKTIC is an organisation that aims to encourage business between Turkmenistan and the United Kingdom and to build upon existing working relationships. The conference was convened with the assistance and input of British Expertise and was co-hosted by Ambassador Ronald Nash, CMG, LVO and Sanjay Wadvani, OBE, the current British Ambassador to Turkmenistan. The Turkmen delegation was led by Mrs Gulshat Mammedova, the Minister for Education of Turkmenistan, accompanied by HE Yazmurad Seryaev, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the UK.

The conference heard from a number of speakers including Professor Charles Hendry MP, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for Turkmenistan, Lord Coe and several representatives of the Turkmen Government, Turkmen State Concerns and Turkmen Educational Bodies.

In providing the delegates with a summary of the energy market in Turkmenistan, Ted drew on his own experiences of working closely with Turkmen State Concerns in the gas and chemical sectors over the last five years.

Fenwick Elliott is one of a handful of Western law firms regularly working in Turkmenistan and Ted was able to provide the delegates with a snap shot of the current position in the energy market and an indication of the significant growth in this sector that is anticipated to take place in Turkmenistan over the next 15 years.

TUKTIC was established by the British Embassy in Ashgabat and the Government of Turkmenistan in October 2010, so that opportunities for increasing trade and investment between the two countries could be discussed at the highest levels with the private and public sectors. The UK Co-Chair is retired Ambassador Ronald Nash, with the Turkmen Co-Chair being at Deputy Prime Minister level.
